Scythe stones: even a seemingly simple product needs the right specification

A scythe stone looks simple: an elongated stone, narrower at both ends and easy to guide by hand. This is precisely why it is often treated as a mere accessory. Yet the specification of a scythe stone also determines the quality of the sharpening result.

What really matters in a scythe stone

Honing removes very little material. The cutting edge that has folded over during mowing is straightened and smoothed again. Three factors must work together for this to remain effective throughout the service life of the stone.

For scythe blades, we generally recommend silicon carbide as the abrasive material because it has sufficient hardness for the material being sharpened.

The grit size determines the surface finish of the cutting edge, but it also depends on the vegetation being cut. A coarser grit is suitable for rapid sharpening in difficult growth, while a finer grit is used for the finishing pass on an edge that has already been properly peened.

Bond hardness is where the differences between stones on the market are most apparent, although it cannot be seen from the outside. If the bond is too hard, the stone does not release fresh cutting edges. Its surface becomes smooth and, eventually, it no longer sharpens even though material remains. If the bond is too soft, the stone wears faster than it should.

Why we pay close attention here as well

We have been developing and manufacturing grinding tools since 1862. During that time, we have encountered almost every grinding task, from precision grinding wheels for series production to scythe stones. This experience goes into every grinding tool we manufacture.

This is what distinguishes us from other suppliers in this market: not the appearance of the stone, but our expertise in the application.

Our brands and the products that do not carry our name

Our SILICAR scythe stone is available as the medium-grit “Blaumarke” in grit size 220 and the fine-grit “Rotmarke” in grit size 400. Both come in the extra-long dimensions of 260 x 36/12 x 15 mm.

We also manufacture private-label scythe stones. We match the grit size, shape and dimensions to your product range. Embossing, printing with your logo and delivery ready-packed in your packaging are also available.

Now is the time to discuss the next season

The scythe stone is one of the few seasonal products in our range. Companies that want to supply their customers in spring should ideally decide on the specification, printing and quantity in September. This ensures that the products are on the shelf in time for the mowing season.

Finally: the product in practical use

In July, our entire team attended a scythe-mowing course with an instructor from Kappelrodeck. We began with the theory (blade geometry, adjustment and handling) and then went out into the grass. The difference between peening and honing became tangible for everyone: peening is cold forging with a hammer, while the scythe stone straightens the cutting edge again during use.

It was an enjoyable day and gave everyone in the team a clearer understanding of what we manufacture these stones for.
